Some curiosities
Miramare Castle
The names of the Al Garibaldino Rooms recall some historical representative locations in Trieste, one of which is Castello di Miramare, a lovely site that we encourage visiting during your stay.
Miramare Castle is located at the end of Barcola’s seashore, a few minutes, by car or bus, from the Central Station and the Center of Trieste.
In the Miramar Room you’ll find a large reproduction of an historical photograph took in 1875, pulled from the historical archives of the city.
A bit of history
Miramare Castle, called in Trieste’s dialect Miramar, has been a residence of the Habsburg Court: the complex was built following the wishes of Maximilian of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and Emperor of Mexico, as a home to be shared with his wife Charlotte of Belgium. Overlooking upon the gulf of Trieste, is located a few kilometers North of the city (about 6 km from the Central station)
Miramare is the Italian form of the original Miramar deriving from Spanish “Mirar el Mar” (Looking at the sea) on account of the fact that Maximilian of Hapsburg, while visiting the ridge that would’ve hosted the Castle, was inspired by the recollection of Spanish castles overlooking the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
The castle is surrounded by a great park of about 22 hectares characterised by a large variety of plants, most of which were chosen by the ArchDuke himself on his trips around the world which he used to take as an Admiral of the Austrian Navy.
Within the park we can also find a smaller building, that has been used as a residence for the newlyweds during the construction of the Castle itself, but became a prison for Charlotte after she lost her mind following the death of her husband in Mexico.
Miramare Castle still presents the original furniture of the time as a Testimony of the history of the noble owners, the Archduke and his wife Charlotte of Saxony, daughter of the King of Belgium, and their unfortunate fate that didn’t allow them to enjoy their wonderful home.
On the inside, the castle is divided in various rooms. The ground floor was intended as residence for the Emperor Maximilian I and his wife Charlotte while the upper one was, later in time, destined as a residence for the Duke Amedeo d’Aosta who lived there for about seven years and modified some rooms following the style of the time.
This Castle turned fateful for its occupants. Maximilian parted to grasp the imperial crown of Mexico and died. Amedeo parted for the empire of Ethiopia, of which he became vice King, and soon after died in prison.
Subsequently the castle became a history museum and in 2016 registered 257,237 visitors, while the park of the Miramare Castle registered 833,300 visitors.
